A Stroll Through Enfield Town Mural
A Stroll Through Enfield Town – A New Mural Celebrating Local Stories
A Stroll Through Enfield Town, created by artist Anna Nicolò, was officially launched in December 2023. The mural is located in the heart of Enfield Town, in the lively alleyway between Deichmann Shoe Shop and Marks & Spencer in Palace Gardens Shopping Centre.
The artwork celebrates Enfield Town’s unique history, culture and community. It brings together stories of the town’s market roots, literary heritage, historic buildings, industries and innovations, and much-loved spaces like the library. At the same time, it captures the contemporary energy of the bustling market and town centre.
Ideas for the mural grew from creative workshops and interviews with residents and market traders, who shared their memories and hopes for the town. These conversations inspired themes ranging from Enfield’s heritage as a market town to its reputation for invention and creativity. The design celebrates the town through its iconic buildings, familiar characters, and key cultural moments - such as the 100th anniversary of the market celebration when the Queen visited the watchmaker - capturing the spirit that makes the town instantly recognisable.
Artist Anna Nicolò worked closely with Public Art Champions Aisha, John and Shan-Jay, guided by artist-mentor Mark Beattie from Hive Curates, to bring these stories to life. Young people also played an important role: Sixth Form art students from Enfield County and participants from the local Youth Justice Reparation programme contributed their time and skills to the painting process.
The mural was revealed at a special launch in December 2023, attended by community members, market traders, artists and local leaders. The event was a celebration of collaboration and creativity, with Cllr Chinelo Anyanwu even contributing brushstrokes to the artwork’s creation. The launch marked not just the unveiling of a mural, but the recognition of Enfield’s shared identity and the community effort behind the project.
A Stroll Through Enfield Town is the first of six public art commissions delivered through the Curate Enfield programme, which has already produced more than 40 new public artworks across Angel Edmonton, Palmers Green, Southgate and Southbury.
This project would not have been possible without the support of many partners. Huge thanks go to Public Art Champions Aisha, John and Shan-Jay, Rivington Hark, Palace Gardens Shopping Centre, The Enfield Society, Arts Council England and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund for making this mural possible.
