Palmers Green Arts Trail - A Celebration of Local Creativity and Community

The Palmers Green Arts Trail was officially launched in October 2023, bringing a vibrant collection of new murals and public artworks to the neighbourhood. Four new large-scale murals were created by artists Bec Dennison, Will Redgrove, Ellie Fryer and Gavin McPhail from The Matchbox Collective. Developed with local residents, artists and community groups, the trail is more than a series of murals - it is a celebration of identity and creativity that is making a lasting difference in Palmers Green.

The trail celebrates Palmers Green’s rich heritage, natural environment and strong community spirit. Its creation was guided by Public Art Champions Aykut, Lydia and Nidel, supported by mentoring from artist Alex McHallam. Community input played a central role: co-design workshops with residents at Laurel Park School, the Ruth Winston Centre and Broomfield Park, alongside activities with organisations such as Philanthropy CIC, helped shape the vision and content of the artworks.

As part of the trail, artists Bec Dennison, Will Redgrove, Ellie Fryer and Gavin McPhail from The Matchbox Collective produced four large-scale murals - The Rhythm of Broomfield Park, The Cat in the Aviary, Fire and Flight and Sanctuary - each reflecting the area’s cultural diversity, creativity, and rich connection with nature and biodiversity.

Alongside the new commissions, the trail also highlights existing artworks curated by the Palmers Green Action Team, Hive Curates and other local partners, showing the area’s growing reputation as a hub of arts and culture.

The trail was launched in October 2023 with walking tours, creative activities and a sense of celebration across the neighbourhood. A specially illustrated map designed by artist Ellie Fryer was produced both in print and online, helping residents and visitors discover the murals and explore Palmers Green’s cultural landmarks.

The trail shines a spotlight on local hubs and businesses including Starfish Loves Coffee, Philanthropy CIC and the Ruth Winston Community Centre, as well as supporting and promoting local traders such as Sophie’s Bakery & Café. By weaving public art into high streets, parks and community spaces, the Arts Trail demonstrates how arts-led initiatives can strengthen local identity and contribute to more vibrant town centres.

The Palmers Green Arts Trail is a proud achievement for the Curate Enfield programme, which has already delivered more than 40 new public artworks across the borough, including in Enfield Town, Angel Edmonton, Southgate and Southbury. Together, these projects are transforming public spaces and building lasting connections between art, people and place.

This project was made possible thanks to Public Art Champions Aykut, Lydia and Nidel, artists Bec Dennison, Will Redgrove, Ellie Fryer and Gavin McPhail, and partners including Palmers Green Action Team, Hive Curates, Philanthropy CIC, the Ruth Winston Centre, Starfish Loves Coffee and Sophie’s Bakery & Café, with generous support from Arts Council England and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
