Revealing Southbury – Public Art Transforming the High Street

Revealing Southbury is a bold public art project that has transformed the look and feel of Southbury’s high street. The project was delivered in partnership with Fisher Cheng Architects, who led the coordination and delivery of the artworks.

The Morning Commute, Qwynto

The artworks were developed through close collaboration with the community, ensuring local voices and stories shaped the final designs. Year 6 pupils from Southbury Primary School worked with artist Qwynto to co-create The Morning Commute- a colourful mural on the bridge opposite Southbury Overground station that reimagines the daily journey to school and work, adding colour and imagination to a key route in and out of the neighbourhood.

On Southbury Road Parade, artist Andrew Werdna and The Blank Walls Collective created Southbury Parade, a series of vibrant shutter artworks for local businesses including Enfield Nail Bar, Southbury Launderette, HMT Food and Wine, Good Fortune and German Doner. Designed through workshops and conversations with residents and shop owners, the artworks bring bold new energy to the high street while reflecting Southbury’s unique stories.

The project was shaped with valuable input from Place Champions Safia Banharally and Trini-Maria Katakwe, who supported both community engagement and creative development. Their involvement ensured the artworks remained rooted in local perspectives. The Place Champions were involved in many ways, gaining hands-on curatorial experience and building skills that will continue to support their creative journeys.

The project was officially launched in June, with the Southbury Launderette transformed into a lively community hub for the day. Residents gathered to celebrate, with creative displays from Place Champions and contributions from local participants. The event showcased how public art can bring people together, uplift shared spaces and spark pride in the local area.

Revealing Southbury is part of the wider Curate Enfield programme, which has already delivered more than 40 public artworks across the borough, including in Enfield Town, Palmers Green, Angel Edmonton and Southgate. Together, these projects are creating a lasting legacy of public art that strengthens identity and community connections across Enfield.

Huge thanks to Place Champions Safia and Trini, artists Qwynto, Andrew Werdna and The Blank Walls Collective, The shops on Southbury Parade and the inspiration of Southbury’s residents. Special thanks also go to Fisher Cheng Architects, Arts Council England and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund for their support.
