Construction - Phase 1 – Section 1 Tenniswood Road to Ladysmith Road link

Enfield Council is making walking and cycling improvements through delivering the New River to Brick Lane Walking and Cycling Route. This project is being delivered by the Council’s Journeys and Places programme which delivers on the Council’s ambitions to enable more people to walk and cycle across the borough.

The project is being delivered in phases. Engagement with the community on the project began in early 2023 and the decision has been made to implement the proposals that are part of the phase being referred to as ‘Phase 1 – Section 1, Tenniswood Road to Ladysmith Road link’. These changes include improving the existing shared path near the footway bridge at Tenniswood Road and Ladysmith Road.

We acknowledge that there was a concern regarding the introduction of seating spaces on the new green space raised during the statutory consultation period. After careful consideration of the concern raised by residents regarding the potential increase in anti-social behaviour associated with the proposed bench, the Council has decided not to proceed with installing the bench in this particular instance. However, it is important to emphasise our commitment to delivering interventions such as seating in line with the Healthy Streets indicators to make it possible for people to stop and rest when walking, cycling and enjoying their local areas. At this stage, alternative options to improve the space will be looked at. Through encouraging social interaction, fostering inclusivity, and supporting physical and mental wellbeing, these seating areas not only enhance the urban environment but also contribute to safer and more vibrant communities.

We will inform residents as we progress to future phases of the project including future opportunities to comment via statutory consultation processes.

Construction works on Phase 1 – Section 1 are scheduled to commence on Monday 13 May 2024 and will take approximately 5 weeks. The works will be carried out under a series of traffic management layouts and will provide an improved facility for people cycling and walking. The footway bridge between Tenniswood Road and Ladysmith Road will be closed for the duration of the works. Advanced warning signage will be placed at strategic locations to effectively advise and guide the public, providing a smooth diversion via alternate routes. Please note the schedule is subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Future phases

A statutory consultation that was held in January and February 2024 on the draft traffic order TG52/1547 for Brick Lane, Ladysmith Road, Oldbury Road and Cambridge Gardens. The decision has now been made to make the traffic order permanent, as well as undertake changes proposed by the project that do not require a traffic order. The Response to Objections raised during the statutory consultation will be available in the coming months on the project page. This will be delivered in future phases of the project and we will be writing to residents again ahead of any works taking place.
