Construction update: Hertford Road and Brick Lane junction improvements

We are preparing to begin the next stage of works to the New River (Tenniswood Road) to Brick Lane Route. These improvements are part of our commitment to make it easier and safer for people to travel around Enfield. The project will improve connections for people walking, wheeling and cycling, while helping create safer and more accessible streets for everyone.

Following the statutory consultation held between 4 June and 6 July 2025, the decision was made to implement the proposals set out in Traffic Order TG52/1591. The upcoming works form part of the approved Phase 2 improvements.

What improvements are being made?

The next phase of construction will focus on the junction of Hertford Road and Brick Lane.

The works will include:

  • Re-routing the slip road south of the junction so vehicles do not need to enter the junction to access Hertford Road.
  • Installing new formal crossing points to make crossing easier and safer.
  • Introducing a raised table to help reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for people crossing the road.
  • Improving the crossing near Green Street to create better shared space for people walking and cycling.

Construction programme

Construction is currently scheduled to begin on 21 September 2026 and is expected to take approximately 14 weeks to complete.

The works will be delivered in phases to help minimise disruption and allow the improvements to be completed safely.

What to expect during construction

Before work begins, advance warning signs will be installed to help people plan their journeys.

During construction:

  • Temporary footway diversions may be required.
  • Some parking bays may be temporarily suspended.
  • Access to local businesses will be maintained throughout the works.
  • Traffic management arrangements will be clearly signed.

We understand that construction can cause disruption and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Our contractor, Kenson Highways, will work to minimise disruption wherever possible and complete the works as efficiently as possible.
