Design update: Phase 1 - Section 2 Ladysmith Road to Cambridge Gardens
Following on from the construction update posted on 20 August 2024, we have a further update on the interventions that will soon be constructed. We will be replacing the existing staggered barriers on the western end of Cambridge Gardens with bollards to ensure access people using the walking and cycling route, whilst restricting cars and other motorised vehicles to pass through. Some more context on this change is below.
Enfield Council has made it a priority to improve accessibility for all users on proposed schemes throughout the borough, and in order to carry out this goal a number of different standards (e.g. LTN 1/20, DDA regulations and others) have been considered when developing the designs for the New River to Brick Lane Walking and Cycling Route. LTN 1/20 is one of the design guidance documents that we are required to adhere to when designing new cycle routes. It is specifically stated that that any measures that control access, such as chicane barriers and dismount signs, should not be used because they reduce the inclusive usability of the route, as people riding nonstandard cycles and cargo bikes may be excluded. Additionally, they reduce the capacity of the route as well as its directness and comfort.
