January 2024 - Statutory Consultation New River to Brick Lane Phase 1

In January 2023, we invited residents to share their ideas and issues to inform the development of Enfield Council’s proposal of a walking and cycling route from the New River (at the Tenniswood Road bridge) to Cycleway 1 (Hertford Road) via Brick Lane. This project is being proposed as part of the Journeys and Places programme. This period of engagement with the community informed the design for the walking and cycling route which is planned to be delivered in phases.

The draft Traffic Order TG52/1547 for Phase 1 of this project has now been published and we invite you to make a representation or objection through the statutory consultation. In addition, we welcome your comments on some proposals for the project that we are looking to deliver later as funding becomes available.

The New River (Tenniswood Road) to Brick Lane project will consist of a quiet cycleway and improvements for people walking to make it a safer and more attractive route to walk, wheel and cycle. The draft Traffic Order proposes changes to waiting and loading restrictions. The proposed interventions aim to:

  • improve accessibility of the area for all road users
  • enable more people in the area to walk and cycle, increasing levels of physical activity
  • reduce the speeds at which motor vehicles travel along Brick Lane.

The proposals feature:

  • removal of the staggered cycle barriers at Soldiers Alleyway
  • improvements to the entrance of both Soldiers Alleyway and the pathway from Oldbury Road leading to the A10
  • enhancements to shared paths and implementation of cycle demarcations
  • two buildouts that feature rain gardens as traffic calming measures along Brick Lane
  • the conversion of speed humps to be cycle friendly at Brick Lane.

In addition, we invite your comments via the survey on the additional elements of the route that we are exploring, including:

  • the removal of footway parking at the junctions of Brick Lane with Gough Road, Wolsey Road, Hammond Road, Barnard Road, Mapleton Road, Orchardleigh Avenue and Yeomans Way.
