Fore Street’s well-loved library has reopened following an innovative refurbishment that has transformed it into a versatile and inclusive ‘Living Room’.

The Living Room – with made-to-measure movable shelving units and plenty of light-filled space - will host a wide range of events including community workshops, consultations, training, and artistic and cultural activities, alongside improved library facilities.

The library development is one of many changes in the Fore Street area, funded by the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund and Enfield Council. The improvements, led by Enfield Council’s Town Centre Development Team, include a series of murals throughout Angel Edmonton, affordable workspaces at Angel Yards to be operated by the Launch It Trust and a new school street at St. John & St. James Primary School.

Enfield Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Ergin Erbil, attended the library launch event on 7 July alongside the Deputy Mayor for London for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, Jules Pipe. They were joined by many guests including local contractors Nico Construction and professional makerspace Bloqs who delivered the new space, and community interest company Fore Street For All.

London’s Night Czar, Amy Lamé, visited Fore Street in Angel Edmonton in March 2022 as part of a series of Night Surgeries being held across London as the GLA works towards making London a 24 hour city.

The night surgery was an incredible opportunity to hear about the community-led events and projects and Council plans underway to develop and diversify the high street’s cultural, economic and social life at night, building upon projects supported by the Mayor’s Good Growth and High Streets for All Challenge funds. Enfield Council introduced Amy Lamé to a diverse range of local businesses, residents and community groups to hear about their challenges faced at night, and the opportunities to work together to activate the public realm with light and life after dark.

Fore Street was selected as the borough’s night time strategy pilot project, with Enfield Council and their partners seeking to capitalise on projects already underway to develop the town centre’s night time economic and cultural vitality. Enfield Council will use Fore Street as a blueprint for developing night time actions and projects across the borough’s other town centres.

A range of new evening and night time initiatives have been piloted along Fore Street, including Enfield Winter Lights and a project to transform Fore Street Library into the Living Room Library, funded up the Good Growth Fund.

The wide-ranging ambitions of Enfield Council’s Angel Edmonton Town Centre Action Plan are being delivered with the start of transformational work around Fore Street funded by the Mayor of London.

In 1886 Edison Swan United Electric Light Co. took over the former jute mill at Duck Lees Lane in Ponders End and converted it to manufacture electric light bulbs, leading to the factory being known colloquially as ‘The Lamp’.

This work is supported by The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) Welcome Back Fund, established through a grant from the European Regional Development Fund (EDRF). Delivered by Artist Hive Studios. The money is helping Enfield Council put in place additional measures to establish a safe trading environment for businesses and customers in the wake of COVID-19, particularly in high streets, and support our local economy on the road to recovery.
