Fore Street’s well-loved library has reopened following an innovative refurbishment that has transformed it into a versatile and inclusive ‘Living Room’.

The Living Room – with made-to-measure movable shelving units and plenty of light-filled space - will host a wide range of events including community workshops, consultations, training, and artistic and cultural activities, alongside improved library facilities.

The library development is one of many changes in the Fore Street area, funded by the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund and Enfield Council. The improvements, led by Enfield Council’s Town Centre Development Team, include a series of murals throughout Angel Edmonton, affordable workspaces at Angel Yards to be operated by the Launch It Trust and a new school street at St. John & St. James Primary School.

Enfield Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Ergin Erbil, attended the library launch event on 7 July alongside the Deputy Mayor for London for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, Jules Pipe. They were joined by many guests including local contractors Nico Construction and professional makerspace Bloqs who delivered the new space, and community interest company Fore Street For All.

The festival pays homage to local luminary Sir Joseph Wilson Swan, a pioneer in the electronics industry and an early developer of a successful incandescent light bulb, over 130 years ago. In 1886 Edison Swan United Electric Light Co. took over the former jute mill at Duck Lees Lane in Ponders End and converted it to manufacture electric light bulbs, leading to the factory being known colloquially as ‘The Lamp’.

This work is supported by The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) Welcome Back Fund, established through a grant from the European Regional Development Fund (EDRF). Delivered by Artist Hive Studios. The money is helping Enfield Council put in place additional measures to establish a safe trading environment for businesses and customers in the wake of COVID-19, particularly in high streets, and support our local economy on the road to recovery.
