The Town Centres Team launched the first phase of Fountain Island outdoor trading/al fresco dining in July 2020. The project supported three businesses with new outdoor trading space and helped to activate this key and prominent location in the town centre. This year, we will be building on the scheme to support even more local businesses/organisations which would support not only outdoor dining but also more cultural and community activities/events.

The second phase of Fountain Island is expected to be delivered in Spring 2021, following which the council will continue to work with businesses and organisations in the area to jointly produce a long-term plan/programme for the future of the space.

The Town Centres Team have helped to bring a new al-fresco dining area in Enfield Town. The new space will help support local businesses to welcome customers in a fun and safe outdoor environment. We have helped three businesses to expand onto the area known as Fountain Island, this in turn will help increase footfall to the town centre and support the wider local economy in its recovery and renewal.

Gooey Waffle, Bonito Café and The Art Town all feature on this exciting new mini-plaza. The scheme includes the loan of furniture and equipment to the businesses and the assembly of safety features and attractive planting.

Last year, a new temporary Pavement Licence regime was implemented following the government initiative to support the hospitality sector which has faced several challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, we have awarded 60 businesses with these new pavement licences since they were introduced in 2020, including to the Fountain Island businesses.

Further trader support implemented has also come from other grants including the government’s Additional Restrictions Grant. And in total, we have issued more than 15,000 grants to 2,328 Enfield businesses, totaling £29,975,904.
