What are wetlands?

Wetlands are shallow basins which are planted up with wetland vegetation such as reeds and rushes. They collect and store stormwater runoff to reduce flood risk downstream and take pressure off the existing drainage system.

Another benefit of wetlands is that they naturally filter water as the plants and microbes living within the wetlands break down pollutants as sediments settle. This means that any runoff leaving the wetlands will make its way towards the closest river much cleaner than before.

How will the wetlands be funded?

The Council will seek to secure external funding for this wetland project from the Environment Agency, Thames Water or through Section 106 developer contributions.

    How can I get involved?

There will be engagement activities such as planting events, and management days, where residents and visitors can get involved with the establishment of the wetlands within Enfield Playing Fields. You can register for updates using the 'Subscribe' tool on this project page (top right corner of the page).
