Fore Street is at the heart of Angel Edmonton, a dynamic local town centre but one which also suffers from high levels deprivation, serious crime, and a shortage of opportunity and employment.
Enfield Council have secured £2.2 million in funding from the Mayor of London to improve spaces along and around Fore Street, including:
- Upgrading the existing library into Fore Street's Living Room Library, supporting a range of additional community and cultural activities
- Transforming existing underused garages into affordable workspaces
- New street furniture and artwork to the public realm along Fore Street and in key alleyways
- A clean air route which will include improved air quality outside St. John & St. James Primary School
We spoke with stakeholders throughout the preparation of our funding application, and each of these ideas has been developed in response to specific local needs and aspirations. Together, they will aim to highlight and strengthen the existing identity of Angel Edmonton, while working towards the objectives set out in Enfield's Local Plan.
Enfield Council have appointed Jan Kattein Architects and Fisher Cheng to design and deliver these improvements, see the overview video to introduce the projects.
Fore Street Action Days - May 2021
We want the community to shape the public realm around which they live, work and spend time. During our latest public engagement events on 21st and 22nd May 2021, we showed updated designs for the public realm. The proposals were generally positively received, welcoming opportunities for colour, more lighting and greenery in the public realm, as well as the opportunity to engage with local creatives as part of the process. The experimental idea of having portraits in the Joyce and Snells alleyway was questioned, and the design moving forward will take this feedback on board.
"I can imagine young people will want to Instagram themselves in the alleyway once the artwork is there, like in Covent Garden!"
"I love the lighting in the trees, it is such a simple thing but can really uplift the area"
"This is a low income area where healthy living gets neglected. How can we encourage healthy living in the local community?"
"The artwork should promote positive vibes"

On the evening of the 22nd May, we conducted a Night Walk up and down Fore Street to hear about experiences of the street at night and how this might be improved. Your feedback centered around a lack of things to do on the high street at night, and providing a sense of safety at night being a priority. We understood from the conversations that enhancing lighting and activity would help improve a sense of safety.
"There’s nothing to do on Fore Street at night except get takeaways. If there was more activity on the streets apart from betting shops and takeaways which attract certain types of people, it would feel safer."
"I feel it’s become less safe in the past year, there are lots of men loitering on the streets and people with mental health problems. If I return home late from work I really have to consider if I want to take the overground or the bus as the bus stop is closer – but I still have to have my wits about me even on the short 2 minute walk home from the bus stop. It does not feel safe at night."
