It is proposed to create some wetlands on the southern edge of the sports grounds to catch runoff from the fields in heavy rainfall events. The wetlands will have shallow graded slopes, with a depth of 300mm of water in day-to-day conditions. They will be planted up with native wetland plants such as common reed, purple loosestrife and yellow frag iris.
When there is heavy rain, drains can become overwhelmed and water can begin to run over the land as there is no space within the drainage system. The wetlands will intercept this overland flow, and provide storage for the water that can’t enter the drainage system which reduces flood risk downstream. There is also scope to improve the land drainage of the playing fields to reduce the risk of waterlogging.
