As part of the Journeys and Places programme, Enfield Council is continuing to develop a network of active travel routes in Enfield to encourage more people to walk and cycle in the borough. Enfield Council is proposing a walking and cycling route from Enfield Town to Ponders End Station, which is funded by Transport for London (TfL).

Currently there are numerous active travel routes that run from north to south throughout the borough. However, there are limited east to west routes to connect the existing facilities to one another. The Enfield Town to Ponders End Station Walking and Cycling Route would help address this issue as it would connect to the walking and cycling route which has been introduced along Ponders End High Street (Cycleway 1) and the proposed Enfield Town to Broxbourne Walking and Cycling Route project via the proposed Enfield Town improvements project. Ultimately, this project would be a part of a larger east-west network to create a future strategic cycle corridor.

The proposed route starts at the eastern side of the Southbury Road / Willow Road junction and reaches Ponders End Station via Alma Road. The total length of the proposed route (subject to confirmation of the preferred alignment) is approximately 3.9 kilometres.

The proposed route aims to:

  • Provide a quieter, safer, and more pleasant route that will encourage people to use active travel modes for more of their journeys.
  • Reduce the volume of motor traffic on the section of Main Avenue outside Bush Hill Park Primary School.
  • Provide a safe cycle facility across the A10.
  • Promote cycling along car-free areas such as though Bush Hill Park and Ponders End Park.

  • A Document Library on the right-hand side which contain key documents.

The Journeys and Places Team would like to express our gratitude to all those who actively participated in the engagement process that took place earlier this year for the Enfield Town to Ponders End Station Walking and Cycling Route project. The early engagement report is now complete and published on this project page.

Since the engagement period, we have been working on the concept and detailed design for the project. The ideas and issues raised by residents during the early engagement process have contributed to developing these designs. The primary focus of this scheme is the detailed design of the route through Bush Hill Park. Additionally, the concept designs for the Willow Road to the A10 section of the route have also been progressed.

We will share the progressed designs with the community in due course. Should the project continue to progress, Bush Hill Park will continue to be the primary focus of the scheme. We will write to residents and businesses in the area as well as post an update on the project page with more information on the designs when they are ready.

We sincerely appreciate your continued involvement and support in this project.

We would like to hear your ideas on the proposed route, including what we should consider when designing it, any issues you think we should know about, and ideas you may have to make it a safe, accessible and enjoyable walking and cycling route.

Share your ideas and issues with us via the interactive map on the project page where you may place a pin at a location along the route and provide your ideas as well as identify issues related to walking and cycling in the area.

The map will be open for you to share your comments until midnight Sunday 12 February 2023.

We will be taking on board the feedback gathered which, along with early monitoring data and information, will inform the designs for the proposed walking and cycling route from Enfield Town to Ponders End Station. We will develop a proposed plan which will be presented to the community later in 2023. This will be subject to funding and to statutory consultation ahead of a decision to proceed with the implementation of the project.
