Enfield Council is committed to making it easier and safer for people to walk across the borough. The Green Lanes / Hedge Lane / Bourne Hill Walking Improvements project supports this ambition by responding to local, regional and national priorities to tackle the climate emergency, reduce congestion and help people lead more active, healthy lives.

The Green Lanes / Hedge Lane / Bourne Hill junction has been identified as an area where improvements are needed, and there has been strong interest from the local community. Located in a predominantly residential area to the north of Palmers Green and close to the Fox Lane Quieter Neighbourhood, this project focuses on improving the safety and accessibility of the junction for people walking and cycling.

The proposed improvements include new signal-controlled pedestrian crossings on all four arms of the junction, alongside enhancements to existing cycling facilities. An ‘all-red’ phase is also proposed, where all vehicle traffic is stopped, allowing people walking and cycling to cross safely in all directions at the same time.

These changes will create a safer, more accessible and more comfortable environment, making it easier for people to choose walking, wheeling and cycling for everyday journeys.

Enfield Council has developed a concept design for the Green Lanes, Hedge Lane and Bourne Hill walking improvements scheme. The proposals focus on making it easier and safer for people to cross the junction, including new pedestrian crossings on all arms, alongside improvements to the existing cycling arrangements.

To help shape the proposals, we have undertaken an extensive traffic modelling exercise to test different design options. This work has allowed us to refine the scheme to improve conditions for people walking and cycling, while seeking to minimise impacts on traffic and bus journey times.

Enfield Council is working closely with Transport for London as the design goes through the formal assessment process.

Subject to approval by Transport for London, the project will move into the detailed design stage. Updated designs will then be shared as part of statutory consultation, which is expected to take place in early summer.
