Enfield Council is delivering a range of projects to promote sustainable travel and create healthier streets for everyone. As part of this, we are exploring new ways to make bus travel more reliable through the TfL-funded Bus Priority programme. The programme is designed to make journeys quicker and more consistent for the thousands of people who rely on buses every day, while also encouraging more residents to choose public transport.

What is the Bus Priority Programme?

Buses are a vital part of the transport network in Enfield, with over 340,000 journeys made on bus routes that travel in or through the borough each day. Making sure that buses can run smoothly helps everyone – from students travelling to school, to key workers getting to their jobs, and older residents making local trips.

The Council’s Transport Strategy sets out our commitment to work closely with TfL to bring forward bus priority improvements where they are most needed across the borough. This means we will also consider the role of buses and wider public transport when designing other future projects, ensuring that public transport continues to be a practical and attractive choice.

This page will keep you up to date on the wider Bus Priority programme, including details of specific projects and routes where changes are being proposed. You will find information about forthcoming statutory consultations, opportunities to share your views, and reports on how projects are progressing.

Following an 18 month trial period, a decision has been made to permanently implement the bus lane on Bowes Road. The project has been delivered as part of the TfL-funded Bus Priority programme, which focuses on delivering quicker and more consistent bus travel.

Anyone could make an objection or representation in writing during a six-month statutory objection period, between July 2024 and December 2024. Thank you to everyone who provided a response during this time.

The decision to permanently implement the bus lane comes after analysis of travel data collected during the trial period alongside objections and representations received from local residents. The analysis demonstrated an increase in daily public transport use at the bus lane location, improvements to bus journey times through the area, and a more balanced distribution of traffic along this section of Bowes Road throughout the day.

A document containing the response to objections has been published on the project page and can be viewed here.

In February and March 2025 Enfield Council undertook early engagement with residents on a proposed bus lane along the east side of Church Street, between Church Street/Ridge Road junction and Church Street/A10 Junction, as part of the TfL-funded Bus Priority Programme.

We have produced an engagement report that summarises the feedback received, which can be read here.

Based on the feedback received, we will continue to review the current concept designs and explore further opportunities to improve the bus services and the traffic flow on Church Street. This will consider the recommendations from local residents and other stakeholders. At this time, there are no plans to move forward with the proposed scheme in its current form.

Further updates on the project will be shared on the Bus Priority Programme Let’s Talk Page.
