We’re working to make Edmonton a place where everyone feels welcome, represented, and able to thrive.

With £11.9 million of funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Enfield Council has a special opportunity to make lasting improvements to the neighbourhood – supporting a more vibrant, attractive, greener, cleaner, and safer place for all.

In collaboration with the community, we’re delivering projects that will improve public spaces and connections, create opportunities, nurture inclusion, support wellbeing, and celebrate Edmonton’s culture and heritage.

What’s happening

Over the next two years we will deliver:

  • More inviting and accessible parks at Florence Hayes Rec and Raynham Green
  • A new play space on the Joyce and Snell’s Estate
  • A more welcoming Fore Street with footway upgrades and resurfaced high street
  • An expanded Leeds Street Market with space for more traders and events
  • A safer pedestrian crossing at Silver Street Station
  • A walking and cycling route linking the area to Meridian Water
  • Better community facilities on the Joyce and Snell’s Estate
  • Enhanced cultural space at Angel Community Centre
  • Refurbished workspaces at Community House

Building on success

This programme is part of significant wider council and government investment in Edmonton and builds on improvements already delivered, including Angel Yard, the Living Room Library, and the Fore Street Murals – projects that have brought new opportunities and pride to the area.

Working in partnership

Alongside the community, we’re working with the Greater London Authority, the Metropolitan Police, and Transport for London to design and deliver this comprehensive programme for Edmonton.

Be part of it

Your ideas and experiences are vital. We’ll be working with residents, businesses, and community groups throughout the programme to make sure these projects reflect local priorities. Visit the Community Room in the Living Room Library on Fore Street, N18 to see what’s planned, take part in workshops, and share your views.

Construction is now underway at Raynham Doorstep Green, marking an exciting step forward for the local community as part of Shaping Edmonton, our programme working together for a welcoming and thriving Edmonton.

This project is transforming the park into a cleaner, greener, and more welcoming space for everyone to enjoy. The improvements taking shape reflect what local residents, families, and young people told us matters most: a safer, healthier, and happier place to spend time outdoors.

Cllr Sabri Ozaydin, Cabinet Member for Environment and Placemaking, recently visited the site to see progress first-hand and meet the team delivering the work.

Once complete, Raynham Doorstep Green will offer new and upgraded play equipment, including a basket swing, play tree and multi-play unit, alongside accessible seating, picnic spaces, and outdoor exercise equipment that support health and wellbeing. Improved entrances, fencing and planting will make the park feel safer and greener, while a dedicated dog exercise area and new bins will help keep it cleaner for everyone.

Enfield Council has also been working closely with Raynham Primary School to explore ideas for an outdoor classroom, a place for young people to connect with nature and learn about the environment right on their doorstep.

Construction is being delivered in phases to keep the park open and accessible wherever possible.

Families in Upper Edmonton gathered to celebrate the opening of the St James Play Space, a vibrant new playground designed to bring joy, connection and safe play to children living in and around the Joyce and Snells Estates.

This new, meanwhile-use facility marks an exciting first step in the delivery of the Joyce and Snells Regeneration Scheme, which will transform the area with more than 2,000 new homes, a large public park, and improved community facilities.

Funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the playground is part of Enfield Council’s Shaping Edmonton Programme, which is focused on delivering immediate benefits for residents while long-term redevelopment plans progress.

The launch event was a lively celebration of community spirit, featuring activities for all ages. Highlights included: football coaching and calisthenics with Tottenham Hotspur Foundation; youth bus from Enfield Council Youth Services; face painting and giant games provided by Hill Partnerships; boxing sessions from Edmonton Eagles; magic from Mr Tickles and music from DJ & MC Academy.

Residents also had the opportunity to meet the Hill Partnerships team who installed the playground, speak with Council Officers about the regeneration plans, and learn more about support available in the borough. Officers from the Council’s Special Educational Needs and Disabilities improvement team were on hand to offer advice, and local police attended to engage with the community.

Cllr Ergin Erbil, Leader of Enfield Council, said: “This new play space is a fantastic example of how we’re achieving real, tangible improvements for our communities now, while we work on the long-term improvement of Edmonton. It’s about creating spaces where families can come together, children can play safely and neighbours can connect.”

Cllr Ayten Guzel, Cabinet Member for Housing, added: “The St James Play Space is just the beginning. It shows our commitment to putting residents first and ensuring that the regeneration of Joyce and Snells is about more than buildings. It’s about people, community and opportunity.”

The St James Play Space is a key milestone in the Shaping Edmonton programme and a visible sign that the regeneration of Joyce and Snells is underway.

Through the Shaping Edmonton programme, Enfield Council is making Florence Hayes Recreation Ground more inviting and accessible for everyone. Over the last few months, we’ve spent time listening to the local community through public events, workshops with schools, and meetings with key groups. We’ve heard the current views and challenges of the park and gathered ideas on how Florence Hayes Recreation Ground could be improved.

Enfield Council and the design team, Project Centre, have developed plans based on what we have heard from residents and park users.

One of the key aims of the project is to make sure the park is more accessible for all children, including those with a disability or additional needs. We want Florence Hayes Recreation Ground to be a safe, inclusive space for everyone.

A new landmark play feature is planned near the park entrance to make the space more welcoming and attract more visitors from Fore Street. By lowering some of the plants and trimming back tree canopies, we’ll open up the view into the park to make it feel more open and inviting.

We’re also making the most of the existing mounds in the park to create fun areas for climbing and sliding - great for adventurous play! Nearby, there will be new accessible seating and picnic tables so parents and carers can relax and catch up while the children play.

The Multi-Use Games Area will also receive a face lift ensuring we are providing a variety of activities for however children want to play in the space.

These changes will bring new energy to Florence Hayes Recreation Ground and create a vibrant, family-friendly space for the whole community to enjoy.

Work has now begun at Raynham Doorstep Green as part of Enfield Council’s Shaping Edmonton programme. Over the next four months, construction will be delivered in phases to bring exciting new improvements to the park. The park will remain open and accessible throughout, but some areas will need to close at certain times to allow works to take place safely. This will include the play park, which will be closed for around a month during winter 2025/26 while new equipment is installed.

Once complete, families, children, and the wider community will benefit from a more welcoming and accessible space – from upgraded play equipment to new seating, planting, a dedicated dog area and outdoor facilities. We will provide updates to allow you to follow the progress of the works in the coming months.

Raynham Doorstep Green is improving as part of the Shaping Edmonton programme.

Together with the community, Enfield Council is creating a safer, greener, and more welcoming park for everyone.

Over the last few months, we’ve spoken with local residents and worked closely with young people to understand the challenges and hear their ideas for the future of the park. The plans we are delivering are based on what the community told us matters most.

We’re creating a thriving and happier space for children and families with improvements to the play park. This includes repairing and replacing some of the existing equipment and adding new features such as a basket swing, multi-play unit and play tree. New accessible seating, picnic tables and outdoor exercise equipment will provide spaces for everyone to relax, play and enjoy.

The park will also feel safer and more welcoming thanks to upgraded fencing, decorative entrance gates, and planting around the edges. A new dog exercise area will sit separately from spaces designed for children, and additional bins will help keep the park cleaner for all.

Working with staff and students at Raynham Primary School, we are also exploring the creation of an outdoor classroom; a place for lessons and activities focused on nature and wildlife.

Raynham Doorstep Green is becoming a space where everyone can feel welcome, represented and able to thrive.

Over the summer, we asked residents, businesses, schoolchildren and visitors what matters most to them about Fore Street.

    How we engaged

We spoke with people in different ways to make sure a wide range of voices were heard:

    • Guided walks and a litter pick with residents and businesses to explore the street and identify opportunities.
    • Pop-up engagement stations at different times of day.
    • An online map where people could pin areas of concern or potential.
    • School workshops with pupils from St. John & St. James and Raynham Primary.
    • A workshop with Enfield Young Creatives.
    • Conversations with local groups and businesses, including Fore Street For All, REACT, knitting and tapestry groups, fitness groups and the Muslim Cultural Society.
    • Letters inviting local businesses and organisations to share their views.

    What we heard

Civic Pride – People value local landmarks such as the old cinema, and facilities like the Living Room Library, Angel Yard, and local shops, as well as art including murals and the poetry trail. However, many want to see stronger civic pride and better street care.

Safety and accessibility – Safety was a concern, particularly around Trafalgar Place, the corner by College Gardens, Cowper Road, and the BP garage. People also asked for smoother paving and improvements to lighting and CCTV to make the area feel safer and more accessible.

Future vision – There were calls for brighter, cleaner and colourful public spaces, with more seating, sociable areas, and opportunities for culture and community events that celebrate diversity. The open space in front of Lidl and the wide pavement outside the Living Room Library were highlighted as potential hubs for cultural activities.

Greening and identity – Residents want more greenery and colour, from shade trees, planting and flowers that bring the street to life. Children echoed these themes, also asking for ‘Welcome to Fore Street’ signs at entrances and more playful features.

    Next steps

Thank you for sharing your ideas. This early engagement has given us valuable insight into the community’s aspirations. In October, we will continue to work with local people to shape concept designs for Fore Street, deciding what elements belong where and how it should feel ensuring the plans reflect the community’s vision.
