Integration, Partnership, Independence

The Journeys and Places team have been engaging with the community of Edmonton Green to understand their aspirations for the town centre and to develop a Vision and Action Plan to support its future success.

The Shopping Centre

Edmonton Green is located in the east of the borough, served by the Overground, and a short walk north of Angel Edmonton. The town centre is dominated by the 10 hectare Edmonton Green Shopping Centre. As with neighbouring Angel, the local population is diverse and young. The housing near the shopping centre is already dense and set to increase with the planned redevelopment of the centre.

The centre does have a leisure centre and a gymnasium, as well as a library and an attractive, busy market, with independent traders, representative of the diverse demographic, selling everything from fruit and veg to carpets to clothing.

Town Centre Vision

Transformation from a shopping centre to a place with an identified heart which links with and acknowledges all its elements—from the market to the station, the shops to the Green itself. It is a place with a diverse, independent offer, which benefits from strong collaborative management.

Latest Action Plan

Based on engagement with the community and analysis of town centre data, we have developed a series of priority actions which make up the Edmonton Green Town Centre Action Plan. Over the short and long term, we will be delivering projects which include:

  • Exploring the development of a community pavilion located on the green area outside the station

  • Establishing a dedicated community hub located within the library

  • Exploring the feasibility of long-term development of the railway arches

Click here to read the latest Town Centre Action Plan.

The Action Plan is intended to be a live document which we will continue to refine and update through ongoing engagement with the community.

Please input your ideas for future town centre projects on the map below and if you have any feedback or questions about your town centre’s action plan contact Journeys and Places Team at JourneysandPlaces@enfield.gov.uk.

The design for a temporary Pavilion on The Green, which will be on site for the next 3 years, has been developed by Fisher Cheng with the local community during the engagement events in Summer ’23. The Pavilion is designed as an open structure without perimetral walls and consists of a decked area of approximately 40 sqm to host performance and community activities. Its roof is open but integrates a shading system to offer coverage in Summer. Lighting and an electrical point are provided, to support a wide range of events at any time of the day.

Construction works for the Pavilion will start on The Green in April and will be completed at the beginning of June.

A programme of community and cultural activities will be held in the Pavilion over Summer ’24 to regularly activate the space. This will include the Untold Edmonton Festival, a cultural programme exploring Edmonton’s rich and diverse history supported by Enfield Council and funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Thank you to all those who attended the Celebrate The Green event on Saturday 9th September. We had a wonderful turnout of over 450 people across the day who enjoyed a wide range of activities that showcase what The Green has to offer as an outdoor community space.

The day begun with an outdoor Tai Chi and Chi Gong class led by Energ'Chi, followed by poetry recitals from Enfield Poets, scenes from Bread and Roses by Enfield People's Theatre, a solo dance performance by renowned krump artist Joshua Vendetta Nash, and closed out with live Congolese Rumba with Central African Youth in Enfield. Also on The Green were DJ & MC Academy spinning the decks, Doodle Designs running a colourful den building workshop, Performing Pets with an adorable petting zoo, storytelling puppet show with Rufus and a display of pinhole photographs taken from Tales from the Towpath by Ben Nathan.

The team were also on site to run through the latest designs for a new Pavilion on The Green, developed across the summer's engagement activities.

Thank you to everyone who took part and provided feedback at the Design The Green event on Saturday 5th August. We welcomed over 100 people, sharing the initial design ideas for the forthcoming Pavilion on The Green, which will be installed in Summer 2024. Due to inclement weather, the event was moved into Edmonton Green Library.

The event was curated with young people from Exodus Youthworx, as part of a co-design workshop held at Croylands Youth Centre on 26th July. Doodle Designs and Exodus Youthworx delivered 'The Green Scene' - picnic, games and music while gathering aspirations for the future of The Green, while artist Amaechi Anolue provided entertaining caricatures for local residents.

Here you can find photos from the co-design workshop as well as on the day, and see which emerging pavilion design was most supported.

Help us shape the future of The Green, a natural asset at the heart of Edmonton Green!

The Green is located between Edmonton Green Shopping Centre and the railway arches, adjacent to Edmonton Green Station. It has the potential to be a precious resource for the local community and Enfield Council is keen to engage with residents and local stakeholders to develop a future vision for this space to:

    • Enhance the Green-Blue infrastructure of the area with the creation of a riparian habitat
    • Provide Community and Cultural spaces via the co-design of a temporary Pavilion to support community engagement and host events linked to Enfield cultural programmes
    • Explore the restoration of the railway arches as a heritage asset and their potential use in the long-term.

    Launch Phase - Summer 2023

The Launch Phase of the project hopes to establish a community-led Statement of Intent for The Green which will be explored across a series of participatory engagement events over Summer 2023.

The outcomes from the Launch Phase will form a brief for the next stage of the project, the Pavilion in The Green to be delivered in summer ’24, and will represent the first step towards achieving the wider project objectives to:

    • Work with local people to animate and make better use of The Green, in its prominent location within one of Enfield’s priority Town Centres.
    • Build up to the creation of an immersive natural environment and expand Enfield’s blue-green infrastructure into a densely developed area.
    • Develop long-term stewardship within the community through engagement and co-design activities in The Green.
    • Layer up with ‘Untold Edmonton’, create opportunities for local heritage, culture and nature to be discussed, celebrated and displayed.
    • Inform the long-term vision for the railway arches via engagement-based activities and interventions.
