Enfield Council is committed to supporting cleaner, greener travel options for everyone across the borough. To make it easier for residents to switch to electric vehicles (EVs), we’re installing 1,000 new EV charging points into existing streetlight columns across Enfield.

Take the survey on the current EV charger proposal here (read more in the project update below).

This rollout will help residents without driveways or off-street parking enjoy the convenience of charging their vehicle close to home. The new chargers will be low-cost and low-speed, making them ideal for overnight or long-stay use.

This project forms part of a wider programme to create an accessible network of EV chargers of all speeds across the borough. The full programme, expected to begin in 2026, aims to ensure that all residents have shared access to an EV charger within a short walk of their home.

How it works

  • 1,000 new charge points will be installed on existing lamp columns throughout the borough.
  • These installations use existing infrastructure, helping to keep costs and street clutter low.
  • The chargers are designed for residential use, suitable for drivers who park overnight or for longer periods.
  • Our partner Char.gy will manage the installation and operation of the charge points.

Get involved

We’re inviting residents to suggest a location for one of the new charging points. If you would like to see a charger installed on a lamp column near your home, you can submit a request here. All locations will be reviewed against installation criteria, including technical suitability and accessibility.

We’re pleased to share that Enfield Council has now begun installing the first tranche of Char.gy electric vehicle (EV) chargers on lamp columns across the borough.

Following consultation, the decision was made to proceed with installation which commenced in June, marking an important milestone in delivering our commitment to expand local EV charging infrastructure. Our delivery partner, Char.gy, is leading the rollout, with around 15 chargers expected to be installed each day as part of this initial phase. A summary of comments received and the council's response can be found here.

This programme will see up to 1,000 new charge points installed on existing streetlight columns, making it easier for residents, particularly those without access to off-street parking, to charge their vehicles close to home. These chargers are designed to be low-cost and low-speed, ideal for overnight or long-stay charging. By using existing infrastructure, the rollout also helps to minimise street clutter and reduce installation costs.

We are aiming to install all 1,000 chargers, subject to consultation and subsequent decisions to proceed for each batch of locations. As outlined previously, locations are being identified and consulted on in stages to ensure residents can review proposals in their area and share feedback before installations go ahead.

This rollout forms part of our wider ambition to create a comprehensive and accessible EV charging network, helping support cleaner air, reduce carbon emissions and enable more residents to make the switch to electric vehicles.

We’ll continue to keep residents updated as installation progresses and as further consultation batches are launched. In the meantime, residents can still suggest locations for future charge points here.

  • Next batch of proposed EV charging points

Over the coming weeks, Enfield Council will be proposing new Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points across the borough to help support cleaner air, reduce carbon emissions and make it easier for people to choose lower emission vehicles.

    How locations have been identified

Proposed locations have been selected using a demand mapping tool to help identify where chargers are likely to be most needed across the borough. This approach considers factors such as existing vehicle ownership, access to off-street parking and local demand.

Each site has also been assessed to ensure it is suitable for installation, including being positioned at the front of the footway and meeting the correct technical requirements for safe and practical delivery.

The proposal is to deliver EV charging points on lamp columns. There are no dedicated EV parking or charging bays proposed.

    Consultation delivered in batches

Due to the number of proposed locations, consultations will be delivered in batches over the coming months. This will allow residents to focus on proposals in their local area and ensure that feedback can be carefully considered for each group of sites.

Residents and businesses located near proposed charging point locations will receive a letter when consultation in their area begins. The letter will include details of the proposals and explain how to provide representations.

Each batch will also be available to view online via the Let’s Talk Enfield website, where anyone can review the proposals and submit comments during the consultation period.

All representations received will be carefully considered before any final decisions are taken.

    Delivery and next steps

The proposed operator is char.gy. Should the decision be made to proceed following consultation, char.gy would install the charging points in the months after the consultation period ends.

We will keep residents updated on the outcome of each consultation batch and any next steps.

    Supporting a greener Enfield

Providing more local EV charging infrastructure forms part of Enfield’s wider commitment to creating a more vibrant, greener and healthier borough. Transport is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions, and enabling the transition to electric vehicles is an important step in reducing our environmental impact while supporting residents to travel in ways that work for them.

We encourage residents to take part when consultation in their area opens and to share their views.

Enfield Council has announced a major step forward in its commitment to supporting sustainable transport, with plans to install 1,000 new electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the borough. The Council has appointed charge point operator Char.gy to deliver the project, which will see the chargers integrated into existing streetlight columns.

The initiative is designed to make EV ownership more accessible for residents who do not have private driveways, offering the convenience of charging their vehicles close to home. The new charge points will be low-cost, low-speed units, ideal for long-stay or overnight charging.

This rollout forms part of Enfield Council’s wider EV charging programme, set to begin in 2026, which aims to ensure that every resident has shared access to an EV charger within a five-minute walk of their home.

“Enfield Council is demonstrating real ambition in its commitment to expanding EV charging infrastructure, making it easier for residents to charge where they live and giving more people the confidence to switch to electric" said John Lewis, CEO of char.gy. "We’re proud to partner with them on this borough-wide rollout, bringing our expertise directly into local communities. By working hand-in-hand with forward-thinking councils like Enfield, we’re making EV charging simple, fair, and accessible for everyone.”

Residents are now being invited to suggest locations for where one of the 1,000 new chargers may be installed on a lamp column near their home, subject to installation criteria. Request an EV charger near your home here.
