School Streets

Overview

The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented changes to travel patterns in London and the rest of the country. As children and young people return to early years, school and further education settings, government guidance remains in place on social distancing. Advice on school travel is that parents/carers, children and young people should be encouraged to walk or cycle where possible, only drive if essential and avoid public transport.

To rapidly increase social distancing at schools when they’re open, we are planning to introduce a trial of School Streets at 12 schools across the borough. These are timed street closures outside the school gates at drop-off and pick-up time, restricting access to motor vehicles. These School Streets will create a safer, more pleasant environment where children, parents and teachers can travel to school by foot, cycle or other ways of active travel without the air pollution caused by motor traffic.

Which schools are taking part?

Enfield Council is working in partnership with Transport for London and the following 12 primary schools to implement School Streets over the summer holidays, ready to commence on the 7th September 2020:

  • Bush Hill Park Primary School
  • Chase Side Primary School
  • De Bohun Primary School
  • George Spicer Primary School
  • Hazelbury Primary School
  • Keys Meadow Primary School
  • Kingfisher Hall Primary Academy
  • Lavender Primary School
  • Meridian Angel Primary School
  • Raynham Primary School
  • St. Paul's CofE Primary School
  • Worcesters Primary School

The closure points for each School Street can be found in the folders in the document library. These School Streets will be in operation from 8.15-9.15am and 2.45-3.45pm Monday to Friday during term time only, commencing on September 7th. During the closure times, the streets will be open to people walking, cycling, and anyone in a vehicle with an exemption.

Volunteers from the schools will be managing the street closures by operating the barriers and opening them for any exempt vehicles. There is a graphic representation in the document library of how these street closure points will look during the School Street operating times.
